Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)

A small, abundant bird seen in all parks around Montreal. It migrates South during the winter. It's name derives of its male's beautiful repertoire of songs to attract females and to defend territory.

How to Identify

To identify, I look for a dark brown spot in the middle of the breast surrounded by light grey feathers; the long tail and the dark stripe over the eyes.

Where and When to Spot

Except winter all seasons, along rivers, ponds and pathways. Usually looking for food on the ground within dense bush vegetation but exposed on top of a bush while performing its song.
